As autonomous vehicles are developed, the interior space of the vehicle becomes more important. If the B pillar structure of the automotive body can be removed, the interior space is wider, all seats can be moved or rotated freely, and it can provide convenience when getting in and out. However, in the vehicle, the B pillar structure has a very important role in securing the basic stiffness of the automotive body against crash and external loads. Therefore, in order to remove the B pillar of the automotive body, the door system should take the place of the stiffness of the conventional B pillar structure. This paper is a study on the new paradigm structure for the crash and stiffness performance of door system of B pillar-less vehicle. By using various analysis methods such as TRIZ technique, ideas for new concepts of stiffness structure were derived. Research was conducted on the skeleton structure that can secure the overall stiffness of the door system, joints structure connecting to it, materials to increase the strength of rigid members, and rigid structure of parts joining to the body such as hinges and latches. Through this research results, we propose the new stiffness structure of the door system that can satisfy the required performance even when the B pillar is removed from the vehicle for the purpose of increasing the utilization of the vehicle’s interior space.
