The High Capacity Metro Train (HCMT) project introduces the most advance rolling stock to Melbourne’s rail network. HCMT is an electric multiple unit train and running on Melbourne’s 1,500V DC overhead catenary system. HCMT is normally configured with 7 carriages with a total length of approximately 160 meters. The track geometry in metropolitan Melbourne is managed under AS7509.3. The irregularity of track conditions due to tolerances in the maintenance will result in vibration to rolling stock suspension systems and reduced travelling comfort to passengers. In this paper, analysis on the dynamic performance of HCMT bogie’s suspension system under irregular track condition in Melbourne railway track between Pakenham, Southern Cross and Sunbury stations is presented experimentally and theoretically. A theoretical model has been developed based on AS7509.3 requirements to simulate HCMT’s dynamic performance under metropolitan Melbourne’s irregular track conditions. The experiments were conducted based on two different loading conditions. The theoretical model developed for HCMT dynamic performance has also been validated by experimental study results. Both experimental and theoretical results show HCMT has lower acceleration values when passing through irregular tracks than the AS7509.3 requirements.
