Research and/or engineering questions/objective: 2022 has been a major step towards automated mobility in Europe. The adoption of regulation EU 2022/2236 in June, regarding the type approval of fully automated vehicles produced in small series, followed by the adoption of the EU 2022/1426 in august, regarding the type approval of ADS systems of fully automated vehicles, set up the basis for CCAM deployment in Europe. However, it is still no clear how safety validation and homologation processes will need to be conducted to guarantee same standards of safety as conventional vehicles. Methodology: IDIADA, as a Technical Service for the type approval of vehicles designated through different Type Approval Authorities, has been part of the discussions of the regulatory expert groups for more than 25 years. In addition to that, IDIADA has a vast experience in the field of ADAS, both in the development and validation areas. This paper is a summary of the novelties introduced by these two new regulations, together with IDIADA own views based on our technical know-how. Results: On response to the technology demand regarding ADS systems, the European Comission adopted in 2022 two new regulations regarding Type-Approval requirements for ADS technologies: 1. EU 2022/2236: setting the requirements for the “Full Vehicle Type Approval” for fully automated driving vehicles produced in small series. Limiting the vehicle market introduction to 1500 units. 2. EU 2022/1426: setting the requirements for the Type-Approval of ADS systems for fully automated driving vehicles. Limitations of this study: This paper addresses only the regulatory topics within EU environment. Other regions in the world use different sources for regulatory requirements and may not be aligned with the European Comission proposal. This paper tackles only the effect that new ADS European regulations will have on the homologation and type approval process, however no test results will be included. What does the paper offer that is new in the field in comparison to others of the author: This paper is strictly focused on the new EU regulations for the type approval of fully automated driving vehicles. The adoption of these has set up an entirely new framework for AD deployment in Europe. However, it also triggers a set of new challenges which are reviewed and discussed on this document. How the homologation process needs to be adapted to these new technologies or the readiness of national laws for the validation of AV might be some of the topics discussed. Conclusion: Automated Driving technologies are evolving quickly, in some cases, new solutions may fall out from the scope of the current regulatory framework. Such restrictions may cut off further development and market introduction of new equally safe technologies with other beneficial functionalities. Regulatory bodies need to keep up with it and include new disruptive solutions in their periodic discussions so to modify current regulations or identify the need for new ones. This paper aims at the dissemination of such information, as to make visible the relevance of the work from the regulatory forums.
