Cities as frontrunners towards zero-emission urban mobility The objective of the paper is to highlight solutions to decarbonise freight- and private passenger vehicles in urban environments and the required legislative frameworks, investments, and parking- and traffic rules to achieve the goals outlined in the EU Green Deal, by answering these research questions: - What are essential steps that OEMs, freight companies, BEV users, and city planners need to take until 2030 to foster decarbonisation of the urban environment? - What are the current state of technology and policy frameworks across Europe to support the decarbonisation of urban mobility, based on the two EU-funded projects of NextETRUCK & SCALE The methodology of the paper includes qualitative research (interviews & policy assessment) of existing policy frameworks, as well as assessments of the requirements and specifications of three pilot cases of electric HGVs for urban freight (NextETRUCK). Additionally, qualitative research will be complemented by the results of the gap analysis of e-charging system architecture and user needs for electric charging in urban environments. The research will focus on specific charging aspects, such as vehicle-to-grid and V2X technology (SCALE). Overall, given that both projects are researching the current state of play at the beginning of their project timelines, the main aspects researched will be based on the results of desk research. One can conclude that the EU Green Deal and the 2035 ICE phase-out are paving the road to decarbonise the road transport sector. Decarbonisation and BEV take-up can only be successful if a stable charging- and grid infrastructure, as well as commercially viable solutions for urban freight delivery, can be provided. Both projects pave the way for such a transition. The paper outlines the current challenges of the above-stated stakeholders, as well as policy frameworks and infrastructure requirements for future large-scale deployment of the technology. A first conclusion from the desk research will be drawn.
