Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online
Name: Konstantin Nowoseltschenko, Research Assosciate
Company: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
Presentation Title: F2021-ADM-139 Design of a modularized fuel cell system for multiple use in different applications
Please introduce yourself briefly…
Hello, my name is Konstantin Nowoseltschenko. I am a research associate in the Drive Systems Research Group of the Institute of Product Engineering (IPEK) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The focus of this research group's work is on systems, methods and processes in the development and validation of conventional, electrified and electric drive systems. My research focuses on application-specific battery system development and modularization of powertrain components in electrified and electric drive systems to increase application flexibility.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
This year at Fisita, I would like to talk about the modularization of fuel cell systems for use in multiple applications:
Fuel cell systems represent a locally emission-free drive system and can be used in a diverse range of applications in both mobile and stationary applications.
For this reason, we are investigating the possibility of a modularization concept for a fuel cell system that focuses on coupling different application scenarios and allows customers to use modules of the overall system in different applications.
Such a concept presents new challenges in product development, which I will address in the presentation.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
Within the presentation, a modularization concept for a fuel cell system for use in multiple applications is proposed by IPEK. Starting with an analysis of application scenarios and reference products, requirements for a fuel cell system for different applications are derived. Afterwards, possible combinations of applications that could be powered by a modular fuel cell system are investigated and a system of objectives for a modularization concept is defined. The presentation will focus on the new challenges in development of such a modularization concept as well as the applied methods of development.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region and what challenges and opportunities do they present?
To enable emission-free and resource-saving mobility, drives are increasingly being electrified, leading to a diversification of drive technologies. The expansion of the battery-electric drive system by the fuel cell is intended to compensate for the disadvantages, particularly in terms of range and charging times. Like the battery, the fuel cell is not (yet) a cost-effective solution. At this point, the development of modularization concepts can be used to provide customer-perceivable product features and to reduce manufacturing costs.

About the FISITA World Congress
Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.
Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
Partner with us
The FISITA World Congress is one of the most important and prestigious gatherings of mobility engineers and executives in the automotive and mobility calendar. We can offer a number of exceptional promotion opportunities for organisations, associations and companies enabling them to meet their targeted audience and interact with the key decision-makers in and around FISITA 2021.
There are many opportunities to partner with us at the upcoming Congress.
