As a pioneer in sustainable mobility, Groupe Renault is taking a lead in the face of the environmental and climate situation by proposing concrete solutions that push back the boundaries.
Thanks to the development of innovative technologies, Renault’s know-how in EV and the launch of the hybrid E-TECH and E-TECH Plug-in engines, the company is taking positive action right now in favor of a decarbonized world. The purpose is to contribute to the fight against global warming, to the conservation of natural resources and to the reduction of polluting emissions from vehicles. These three major challenges structure the commitment to a mobility model that is sustainable both for the planet and for its inhabitants.
Groupe Renault is committed in electric mobility by going far beyond the mere absence of exhaust emissions from its vehicles. The ambition is to work with the stakeholders in the energy transition to build a true electric mobility ecosystem, by using smart charging networks and giving batteries a second, stationary life, thus speeding up the development of renewable energies.
The Group is also the leader in the deployment of the principles of the circular economy on an industrial scale to reduce the impact on resources, by recycling materials in a short loop within the automotive sector, re-using parts, reconditioning components (engines, electric vehicle batteries, etc.) to prolong service life and by recycling vehicles at the end of their life.
The Group is offering solutions for shared electric mobility that is a perfect fit for urban travel projects designed to reduce congestion, improve air quality and use resources more efficiently. Europe now has some 11,000 electric vehicles available for car-sharing, about 7,800 of which have been supplied by Renault.
These three strategic aims contribute to the decarbonization of the automotive sector. To measure its contribution, the Group has committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its vehicles across their entire life cycle by 25% in twelve years. In parallel, and consistent with the COP21 objectives, it has defined a reduction path for its worldwide CO2 emissions which was validated by the Science Based Target (SBT) initiative in 2019. It deals not only with the direct and indirect emissions linked to the consumption of the energy needed in production, but also the “well to wheel” emissions related to the use of the vehicle.
As electric vehicle pioneers, Renault Groupe is one of the European leaders in the segment. Today, the company is capitalizing on this unique expertise to reinforce the electrification of its range, with the aim of making electric mobility accessible to all by developing new hybrid and rechargeable hybrid technologies, by proposing a large range of Electric Vehicles and also by offering new services that contribute actively to the mass availability of a decarbonized mobility.

The automotive industry is engaged in massive electrification today which, combined with the decarbonisation of power generation, will reduce the overall carbon footprint of vehicles by nearly two-thirds over the next few decades.
A pioneer in electric mobility, Groupe Renault has set itself the goal of going further and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 in Europe and by 2050 worldwide. Achieving this objective will require a profound change in the methods of production and use of the raw materials necessary for the manufacture of vehicles, which will represent the bulk of their residual carbon footprint as soon as the use phase is based on carbon-free energy.
The growing tensions over the availability and price of fossil and mineral materials only accentuate this requirement for material efficiency, essential for our industry.
To meet this challenge, Renault can rely on more than 30 years of experience in the voluntary introduction of recycled materials into its vehicles and more than 10 years in the implementation of the circular economy at the different stages of the cycle of its vehicles, through its subsidiaries GAIA, INDRA and BCM (the latter two being held with Suez).
Renault is now intensifying and diversifying its circular economy initiatives, such as its emblematic Re-Factory project aimed at making the Flins automobile plant the first and largest industrial complex dedicated to the economy. circular mobility around four poles:
Retrofit dedicated to reconditioning and extending the life of vehicles
Re-energy around green energy storage and management solutions
Re-Cycle dedicated to the efficient and circular use of materials through reuse and recycling
Re-Start aiming to promote innovation and the sharing of knowledge around the circular economy through a training campus, an incubator and an industrial innovation center.
The Group also places more than ever the use of recycled materials at the heart of the eco-design approach for its vehicles, favoring those from end-of-life products and in particular end-of-life vehicles.

Abstract: The draft international standard of the future ISO 21448 (addressing the SOTIF / Safety of the planned functionality) was published at the beginning of this year. At this point, the ISO/DIS 21448: 2021 is publicly available on the ISO website and can be used for operational applications. The target date for publication of the International Standard remains the first quarter of 2022, despite the pandemic situation.
As a reminder, SOTIF is an aspect of Systems Safety complementary to Functional Safety addressed in ISO 26262. The ISO 26262 series assumes that the intended function is safe and addresses failures that could cause a hazardous event. The scope of ISO 21448 is the analysis, and the safety demonstration, of the intended function in absence of failure, in particular by evaluating its ability to cope with the various road environments with which it may be confronted in operation. These two aspects are of paramount importance for the safety of ADAS and Automated Driving functions.
