Congress: Blind Spot Reduction Effects on Behaviour & Opinions of Drivers Using Digital Wing Mirrors

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Floris van Oosten

Company: Personal Driver Assistance

Presentation Title: F2021-DGT-041 Digital Perspective – On-road Measurements of the Effect of Blind Spot Reduction on the Visual Behaviour and Opinions of Drivers Using the Optimal Digital Wing Mirror Camera Location

Please introduce yourself briefly…

My name is Floris van Oosten, I am 27 years old, and I live in Holland. I have my own company called Personal Driver Assistance. I travel across the country to teach people how to handle their new (electric) vehicle. I want to contribute to automotive safety by providing people with my knowledge about automotive safety systems and how to properly use them on the road. My HAN Automotive university supervisor for this research was Saskia Monsma. She is a board member within the FISITA organisation. Thanks to her, this research was signed up for the FISITA 2021 World Congress.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

This year I will talk about reducing blind spot accidents by using the optimal digital wing mirror camera location, and thereby eliminating the passenger vehicle blind spot. Also included are the effects on the visual behaviour when driving without a blind spot.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

Taking part in this presentation will create new perspective on the use of digital wing mirrors in combination with visual behaviour. Learn about a simple, elegant, low-cost, and effective way to eliminate the passenger vehicle blind spot and thereby reducing blind spot accidents.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

Important trends are the increasing numbers of digital wing mirror systems used in passenger vehicles and trucks; increased driver distraction during driving; increasing vehicle density.

What challenges do these trends present?

Digital wing mirror systems are implemented without clever use of its potential. The challenge lies within convincing manufacturers to optimize the system in the proposed way to reduce or eliminate the blind spot.

With increasing number of ADAS and infotainment systems, drivers are flooded with information. It will be essential for road safety to reduce the number of necessary safety systems by providing the driver with better overview of the vehicle.

With more vehicle on the roads, the chance of hitting another vehicle could be increased. Therefore, better overview of the vehicle is essential for increased road safety.

With more development, digital wing mirrors might become more effective soon.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?

With more development, digital wing mirrors might become more effective soon.

It will become easier to adopt digital wing mirrors inside vehicles with increased screen placement. Drivers will adopt faster to using a screen-based wing mirror system when being used to digital information.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
