Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online
Name: Dipl.-Ing. Peter Riegl, Research Associate
Company: Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt
Presentation Title: F2021-PIF-069 Selection of characteristic test scenarios based on objective criteria for the performance evaluation of vehicle safety functions
Please introduce yourself briefly…
Peter Riegl is a PhD student at the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt, focusing on the validation of vehicle safety functions in simulation environments that are based on real road traffic. He received his diploma in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Dresden in 2013 and his master's degree in automotive engineering from the University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt in 2017. His main research interests include the modelling of driving behavior, vehicle dynamics simulations as well as testing and evaluation of vehicle safety functions.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
To cope with the increasing effort to validate novel vehicle safety functions, the majority of the testing has to be performed in virtual environments rather than with the real vehicle. In order to evaluate the performance with which a vehicle safety function under test handles the critical traffic scenarios in the simulations, objective criteria are necessary. These also allow the identification of the optimal parameter settings of the function as well as the selection of characteristic traffic situations for the real vehicle test, which cover the scenario space in the best possible way.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
The participants of the conference will get an insight into the topic of safeguarding autonomous driving functions. Furthermore, an approach for test case generation based on traffic simulations instead of the accident databases often used nowadays will be presented.

What challenges do these recent trends in your domain present?
A major challenge is to statistically validate autonomous driving functions with a reasonable amount of human and financial resources. An important trend here is scenario-based testing. In contrast to black box testing, this requires sufficient knowledge about the system, which is often not available to the required extent.

About the FISITA World Congress
Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.
Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
Partner with us
The FISITA World Congress is one of the most important and prestigious gatherings of mobility engineers and executives in the automotive and mobility calendar. We can offer a number of exceptional promotion opportunities for organisations, associations and companies enabling them to meet their targeted audience and interact with the key decision-makers in and around FISITA 2021.
There are many opportunities to partner with us at the upcoming Congress.
