Congress: Design optimization of battery pack considering uncertain external pressure

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Yong-Hwan Choi, Senior Research Engineer

Company: Hyundai Motor Company

Presentation Title: F2020-ADM-065 Probabilistic design optimization of battery pack in considering the effect of external pressure with uncertainty

Please introduce yourself briefly…

I am Yong-Hwan Choi, currently a senior research engineer at Hyundai Motor Company. After my master’s degree of mechanical engineering, joined battery team in Hyundai and spent 10 years developing Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and systems for xEVs. My research interest lies heavily on optimization of battery system in consideration of multidisciplinary characteristics and uncertainties of LIB. In addition, focusing on developing data-driven battery model to predict its long-term behaviors including state of health (SOH), swelling, and force evolution.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

A novel framework for battery pack design optimization is proposed to improve cycle life and structural safety.

Cell level cycle tests have been conducted to verify the characteristics of degradation and swelling according to the initial external pressure.

The battery pack was designed to apply the appropriate pressure to the cell and optimized by probabilistic manner

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

Participants will gain an understanding of the mechanical characteristics of Li-ion pouch cell with test results. The importance of initial pressure will be demonstrated and a system modeling to analyse and estimate the pressure in the system will be presented. In addition, a framework for simulate uncertainties of initial pressure in the system will be added.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

Battery reliability and safety.

What challenges do these trends present?

Complex system, Unknown aging mechanism, Insufficient data.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?

Developing prediction model of degradation and swelling.

  • Data-driven and Physics-informed

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
